A Study Of Prayer: Chapter 5
Job Through Proverbs (Job 1:1 NIV) In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. (Job 1:6-12 NIV) One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil." "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face." The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. (Job 1:13-19 NIV) One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" Job had no idea what was going on in the heavens. He had no idea that God was allowing Satan to do evil to Job to prove to Satan that Job’s faith was real, that Job was not just following God for the blessings and the money. How many of us could pass a test like this? It is certainly not a pleasant thing to think about. But, as bad as all of this is, loss of wealth and loss of family, it gets worse. Satan is relentless in his desire to torture Job into denying his faith in God and cursing the Lord. (Job 1:20-22 NIV) At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. (Job 2:1-6 NIV) On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." "Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life. But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face." The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life." (Job 2:7-9 NIV) So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" Satan afflicted Job with terrible pain and disease and even turned his wife against him. His wife advised Job to curse God and commit suicide. If anyone ever had a good reason to contemplate taking their own life, it was Job. His problems make most of our problems look small in comparison. (Job 2:10-13 NIV) He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said. When Job's three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was. Job still had no idea why all of these disasters were coming upon him. In an earlier chapter I mentioned that unanswered prayer is not always the result of sin in ones life. That is why we cannot judge one another. In Job’s case all of these tragedies came upon him, not because he was sinning, but exactly the opposite reason, because he was the greatest man of faith alive in the entire earth at that time. Job’s misfortunes came upon him because of his great faith, not in spite of it. God permitted Satan to ruin Job without cause in order to prove Job’s faith to Satan. Job will no doubt have great stature in God’s kingdom as a reward for all that he endured. (Job 16:7-15 NIV) Surely, O God, you have worn me out; you have devastated my entire household. You have bound me--and it has become a witness; my gauntness rises up and testifies against me. God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes. Men open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked. All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground. Again and again he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior. "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust. (Job 16:16-17 NIV) My face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes; yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure. Even in his great distress, Job was sure that his prayer was pure. He was sure that he was not being punished for secret sins. He did not understand why what was happening to him was occurring, but he was confident that he could still pray to the Lord with a clean heart. In speaking of the wicked Job states that they have know the Lords ways, nor to pray to him. (Job 21:14-15 NIV) Yet they say to God, 'Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?' Eliphaz the Temanite counseled Job to repent and then his prayers would once again be answered. (Job 22:27 NIV) You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows. In most cases Eliphaz’s advice would have been good, but in Job’s case he was wrong. Job had done nothing to deserve what happening to him. If the evils that were coming upon Job were due to his actions, although none of us are perfect, Job would have deserved less punishment than Eliphaz or any of Job’s other companions. Another of Job’s companions, Elihu, basically gave Job the same counsel as Eliphaz, he recommended that Job repent and then he would be restored. Elihu was also wrong concerning the reason for Job’s condition. (Job 33:26 NIV) He prays to God and finds favor with him, he sees God's face and shouts for joy; he is restored by God to his righteous state. God then appeared to Job and Job learned the reason for his suffering. The Lord rebuked Job’s companions for accusing Job falsely and for their errors in judgment. (Job 42:7-8 NIV) After the LORD had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has." God instructed Job’s friends to prepare a burnt offering for their sins and to have Job pray for them in order to obtain forgiveness, and they did so. (Job 42:9 NIV) So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the LORD told them; and the LORD accepted Job's prayer. The Lord rewarded Job after his trial and tribulations with twice as much as he had before, more children, and a long life. Job endured much suffering, but after it was over he was truly blessed by God. (Job 42:10 NIV) After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. (Job 42:11-16 NIV) All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring. The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters. The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so he died, old and full of years. Through all of his trials Job never lost communication with God through prayer. Even though Job lost his temper during the worst part of his experience he continued to pray and never gave up in hoping for deliverance. Had he followed his wife’s counsel he would have cursed God and died at the beginning of Satan’s testing, but had he done so, he would never have lived to receive the blessing after it was over. This is a good thing for us all to remember, no matter how bad it gets, never cease praying to God for understanding or deliverance. We will surely receive it one way or the other, either in the body on earth, or through death at the time of God’s choosing, not our own. (Note: The story of Job illustrates why euthanasia is wrong. No matter how bleak things look there is always hope.) Prayer In The Psalms And Proverbs
