Chapter 37: The Mystery Of The
Second Beast
The false church is portrayed as a woman riding on a beast. This is the church that the False Prophet has united under the Antichrist. Revelation 17:7-8 "I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns. The woman represents false religion, the religion of Mystery Babylon. The woman also represents the city from which the false religion began and has flowed from for thousands of years. Revelation 17:18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the Earth." It was in the city of Babylon that Satan through Nimrod promoted idolatry shortly after the flood, and at that time Babylon was the capital city of the world, that ruled over the kings of the Earth. It was also in Babylon that Nebuchadnezzar set up his image and demanded that anyone who would not fall down and worship it, would be thrown into a fiery furnace. Daniel 3:1 & 4-6 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. Then the herald loudly proclaimed, "This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language: As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace." Nimrod
Genesis 10:8-10 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the Earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in Shinar. (Shinar is modern day Iraq) Nimrod's kingdom was the first attempt by Satan after the flood to bring the world under one government. He was successful until God stepped in and confused the languages at Babel. The book of Jasher gives us some more information about Nimrod. Jasher 7:23 & 44-47 And Cush the son of Ham, the son of Noah, took a wife in those days, and she bare a son, and they called his name Nimrod, saying, at that time the sons of men began to rebel and transgress against God. And Nimrod dwelt in Shinar, and he reigned securely, and he fought with his enemies and he subdued them, and he prospered in all his battles, and his kingdom became very great. And Nimrod reigned in the Earth over all the sons of Noah, and they were all under his power and counsel. And all of the Earth was of one language, but Nimrod did not go in the ways of the Lord, and he was more wicked than all the men that were before him, from the days of the flood until those days. And he made Gods of wood and stone, and he bowed down before them, and he rebelled against the Lord, and taught all his subjects and the people of the Earth his wicked ways. (Nimrod means "Rebel".) Nimrod led the world back into idol worship after the flood. According to Josephus, the Jewish historian, it was Nimrod who convinced the people to build the tower of Babel. Their purpose was to build a city too high to be reached by the waters of another flood. They also intended to kill God when the tower reached to heaven, and put their own Gods in his place. Idolatry is the main theme of the religion of "Mystery Babylon." Idol worship, the worship of Antichrist and his image is exactly what the bible says the False Prophet will compel the world to do during the tribulation period. The Seven Hills
Revelation 17:9 "This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits." The traditional interpretation of this verse is that the seven hills that the woman sits on represent the city of Rome, and that the false religion of the end times is Roman Catholicism. This view is too narrow, it is more likely that the seven hills represent the seven major religions of the world united under the False Prophet, but Rome may yet be involved. Perhaps the False Prophet will force the Pope out of Rome, take over the Vatican, and oversee the Antichrist's false religion from there. In any case, the end times false religion will be greater than just one denomination. It will not involve only Roman Catholicism but all of the religions in the world. Revelation 17:15 "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages." The false religion will be worldwide as indicated by the verse above, and Rome will of course be included. But, the religion of "Mystery Babylon" will be much larger than just one church, denomination, sect, or false religion. The False Prophet will make all the religions of the world worship the Antichrist and his image, and cause them to commit idolatry. In the Old Testament book of Zechariah there is an indication that the capital city of the false religion of "Mystery Babylon" may be a rebuilt Babylon. Zechariah 5:5-11 Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward and said to me, "Look up and see what this is that is appearing." I asked, "What is it?" He replied, "It is a measuring basket." And he added, "This is the iniquity of the people throughout the land." Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman! He said, "This is wickedness," and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed the lead cover down over its mouth. Then I looked up--and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and Earth. "Where are they taking the basket?" I asked the angel who was speaking to me. He replied, "To the country of Babylonia to build a house for it. When it is ready, the basket will be set there in its place." It would not be surprising if the seat of false religion was returned to the city of its origin in the last days, Babylon, under the direction of the False Prophet. The woman called "wickedness" in the basket being taken to Babylon may be symbolic of the woman who will ride on the second beast. If so, this indicates that the seat of false religion will return to Babylon in the end times. It is possible that the Fase Prophet may begin ruling his false church by from Rome by taking over the Vatican and later moving the seat of his power to a rebuilt Babylon. The Beast That Was, Is Not, And Will Come
Again
Revelation 17:18 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the Earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come." The second beast, the one that the woman is riding on, was in the world at one time, was not present at the time that John was writing, and will come upon the scene again and cause the unbelieving world to be astonished. The power of the second beast to astonish the world lies in the ability he gives the False Prophet to work miracles and to appear to have raised the Antichrist from the dead. Notice that only those whose names have not been written in the book of life will be astonished. John 6:39 &10:27-29 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. There is no danger of a true Christian being deceived. Jesus will not lose any of those who have been given to him. God the father and the Holy Spirit will not permit that to happen. This beast that has come up out of the abyss represents the satanic and demonic power that is behind the miracles of the False Prophet. In the Old Testament there is an example of this type of demonic power being manifested, during the time of Moses. Exodus 7:10-11 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: Exodus 7:20 & 22 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh's heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. Exodus 8:5-7 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'" So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt. Exodus 9:8-11 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils will break out on men and animals throughout the land." So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on men and animals. The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians. The magicians of Egypt opposed the Two Witnesses, Moses and Aaron, and duplicated the miracles they were doing. This is an example of how the False Prophet and his accomplices will duplicate the miracles of the Two Witnesses and cause the unbelieving world and it’s leaders to harden their hearts, just as the Pharaoh did. 2 Timothy 3:8 Just as and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. According to the book of Jasher, Jannes and Jambres were the sons of Balaam, that wayward prophet who the Lord spoke to through the mouth of a donkey when Balaam wished to curse the children of Israel for monetary gain. We read about Balaam earlier, in the letters to the seven churches. Revelation 2:14 "You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. 2 Peter 2:15-16 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness. But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey--a beast without speech--who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness. Jasher 79:25-28 & 73:29 And Pharaoh said to Moses, what do you require? And they answered him saying, the Lord God of the Hebrews has sent us to thee, to say, send forth my people that they may serve me. And when they (Moses and Aaron) had gone, Pharaoh sent for Balaam the magician and to Jannes and Jambres his sons. They are the sorcerers and magicians who are mentioned in the book of the law as standing against Moses when the Lord brought the plagues upon Egypt. Since the time of Moses until today Satan has not been permitted to use the demons under his command, to work miracles like those that Jannes and Jambres performed in front of the Pharaoh and the people of Egypt. (Exo 8:5-7 NIV) Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'" So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt. It appears that the power of these demons has been restricted since the time of the Exodus. The plague of frogs was the last plague the magicians of Egypt could duplicate. Revelation 16:13-14 Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the False Prophet. They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. This is the explanation of the mystery of the second beast, that Satan will once again be permitted to use his most powerful demons to deceive an unrepentant and unbelieving world. The power of Pharaoh’s magicians standing against Moses ended with their being able to call forth frogs. They were not able to duplicate any of the miracles of God after the plague of frogs. That power, the power of Satan that the magicians of Egypt possessed will be given for a temporary time to the False Prophet when the three evil spirits that look like frogs come forth from the mouth of the beast. (Exo 8:16-19 NIV) Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,' and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats." They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats came upon men and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. And the gnats were on men and animals. The magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said. Even Jannes, Jambres and Balaam understood when the power of God was at work, but Pharaoh did not repent. Neither will the world at large understand the difference between the power of God and demonic forces. But, the wise, the saved will understand. There is also a strong possibility that the False Prophet may claim to be some great biblical person from the past. Since the Antichrist will claim to be Jesus Christ returned to Earth, it would not be a surprise if the False Prophet claimed to be Moses reincarnated. Since God is sending two people from the past to preach to the world, and Satan always tries to imitate the works of God, it would not be unlikely for him to cause the False Prophet to impersonate Moses. We know that Satan had bad intentions concerning the body of Moses, because he contended with Michael about it. Jude 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" We were not told what the outcome of this dispute was. Perhaps Satan was permitted to preserve the body of Moses for the tribulation period. Moses won't be needing it because he was seen with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration with a more glorious form. Luke 9:30-31 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. It is not surprising that Elijah appeared to the disciples because he has not died yet, but, for Moses to appear in a glorious form with Elijah, before the first resurrection has taken place is peculiar indeed. This may be the Lord's way of letting us know that Moses and Elijah will not be opposing each other during the tribulation. If someone working miracles claiming to be Moses, but rejecting the gospel of Jesus Christ appears on the world scene, he is a demonic impostor in league with Satan because the real Moses is with the Lord and is in agreement with Elijah. God will reveal the answers to these mysteries to his people before the time arrives for them to happen. Matthew 13:10-11 & 13-16 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. |
