The focus of this study is to learn the purpose of angels and watchers and also to find out how God works through them to give us assistance when we need it. We are all already receiving heavenly assistance from our divine guardians and messengers, even if we don’t know it. Those who are saved are receiving angelic assistance in their daily walk with Christ and those who are not are saved are being given opportunities to repent and be saved until the end of their lives. When life in this world ends we will be escorted to the other side by an angel.

(Heb 1:14 NIV)  Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Another purpose of this book is to help us recognize divine angelic assistance in our lives when it is happening. Each and every one of us has at least one angel assigned to us, recording our deeds whether good or evil and providing assistance to us as God permits.

We will use both biblical and non biblical sources for the purpose of this study. Biblical verses will be in italics or in red and quotations from other sources will be underlined or otherwise noted. in this study selections from the Greek Orthodox Bible and the Catholic bible will also be denoted in red.

Differences In the Angelic Kingdom

First of all, not all angels are the same. Just as humans have many different skills and specialties, so do angels. In ancient literature angels are called watchers. Perhaps they were called watchers because they cannot act without the command of God to permit them to intervene in human affairs. Some are archangels, they have command over troops of other angels. The seraphim and cherubim also have special functions which we will look into later.  Some angels have fallen into sin with Satan and are called fallen angels. There are also different ranks among them. Then there are demons which are the spirits that came from the union of angels and human women. When the creatures created from this illicit union (Nephilim) died during the great flood their spirits were permitted to roam and torment and inhabit people until Christ returns.

Angels are spirits who can appear in the form of a human body or in other forms, they possess superior intelligence, gigantic strength, and surpassing holiness. They enjoy an intimate relationship to God as His special created children, contemplating, loving, and praising Him in heaven. Some of them are frequently sent as messengers to men from on high. Unlike humankind who reproduce through normal means, every angel is an individual creation and like Adam, and has the freedom to choose to do good or evil without the stain of original sin upon them.

The Origin Of Angels

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and before he created humans he created the celestial beings we call angels.

(Job 38:1-7 NIV)  Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said: "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-- while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

In the verses above God himself is speaking to Job, so there is no possibility of human reasoning here tainting the meaning. God himself is telling Job about the creation of the earth and that the angels were already in existence and singing for joy while he was creating the earth. This proves that the angels were an earlier creation than us and our planet. They were in existence while God was creating the earth, human beings and many of those things in the universe that are about the same age as the planet. We don’t know exactly when God created the angels, but it is certain that they predate the earth and mankind and that is enough for us to know for now.

All things, including the angels were created by the order of God the Father through Jesus Christ.

(Eph 3:9 KJV)  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

(Col 1:16-17 KJV)  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

It has been said that when God the Father said “let us make man in our image” that he was speaking to Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and that may be true. However, it may also be true that he was speaking also to the angels because they too are created in the image of God, with intelligence and free will to choose to do good or evil.

(Gen 1:26-27 NIV)  Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Enoch reports that angels are set over the functions of the universe and over the living creatures in it, including mankind.

Enoch 20:1-8 And these are the names of the holy angels who watch. Uriel, one of the holy angels, who is over the world and over Tartarus. Raphael, one of the holy angels, who is over the spirits of men. Raguel, one of the holy angels who takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries. Michael, one of the holy angels, to wit, he that is set over the best part of mankind and over chaos. Saraqael, one of the holy angels, who is set over the spirits, who sin in the spirit. Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who is over Paradise and the serpents and the Cherubim. Remiel, one of the holy angels, whom God set over those who rise.

In this study we will primarily focus on the archangels, the angels under the command of the archangels, the cherubim, seraphim along with fallen angels and demons. There are many other types of angels listed in other literature but not enough information is available to do a thorough study on them. In God’s kingdom there are probably many more types of angels and creatures that we haven’t even heard of, but by studying the types that we do know of we should be able to increase our knowledge of heavenly things immensely.

Archangels

(1 Th 4:16 KJV)  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

(Jude 1:9 KJV)  Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

2Esdr 4:36 And unto these things Uriel the archangel gave them answer, and said, Even when the number of seeds is filled in you: for he hath weighed the world in the balance.

According to the apocryphal Gospel of Bartholomew Satan was the first angel created, Michael second and Gabriel third, followed by myriad’s of other angels. Apparently there is a seniority system in heaven. The oldest angels seem to have the highest rank, unless they rebel like Satan did and lose their position, then the others are promoted and move up in rank, just like in business or in the military on earth.

And Satan replied: I was the first angel created, for when God made the heavens, he took a handful of fire and formed me first, Michael second, the captain of the hosts above, Gabriel third, and myriad's of other angels to populate each of the seven heavens.  (According to excerpts from the apocryphal gospel of Bartholomew)

Enoch lists seven archangels. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, (Phanuel) Raguel, Remiel, and Saraqael. There are many different spellings for some of the names which makes it confusing as to whether certain references are pertaining to one of the seven archangels listed by Enoch or to another separate angel. Another angel prominently featured in literature and sometimes called an archangel is Raziel and the name Phanuel seems to be interchangeable with Uriel.

There may be more archangels, perhaps twelve or even more who surround the throne of God. Some sources say that there are seventy angels that surround the throne of God, but it is not known if they are all archangels. We know for certain that their are at least seven spirits that minister before the throne of God, and these ministering spirits are probably angels.

(Rev 1:4 NIV)  John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne,

Seven Angels Of Power

Enoch 40:8-10 After that I asked the angel of peace who went with me, who showed me everything that is hidden: 'Who are these four presence’s which I have seen and whose words I have heard and written down?' And he said to me: 'This first is Michael, the merciful and long-suffering: and the second, who is set over all the diseases and all the wounds of the children of men, is Raphael: and the third, who is set over all the powers, is Gabriel: and the fourth, who is set over the repentance unto hope of those who inherit eternal life, is named Phanuel.' And these are the four angels of the Lord of Spirits and the four voices I heard in those days.

Uriel and Phanuel may be different names for the same archangel because according to Enoch they both have the same function, which is assisting those who are heirs of eternal life. In this study information about Phanuel will be included in the section about Uriel.

The order that we will list and study the Archangels is as follows. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Saraqael, and Remiel. All other angels and reputed archangels will be listed in alphabetical order after
them. All Archangels end with the "el" suffix.  "El" meaning "in God" and the first half of the name meaning what each individual Angel specializes in.

#1 - Michael, The Captain of God’s Armies

Michael, whose name means 'who is as God', or "Who is like to God?" is generally considered to be the foremost of the seven archangels and the leader of the Host of Heaven. In both Biblical and non Biblical writings Michael ranks as the greatest of all angels. He was the second Angel created by God, (after Satan) and is the leader of all the Archangels. Michael has power over the fallen Angel Satan, and has the reputation of being in the Garden of Eden to teach Adam how to farm and care for his family. He is believed to have been the angel who spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai.

Michael is sometimes known as Sabbathiel and some think that like most humans, all angels have a first name and a last name. In the case of Michael his full name would be Michael Sabbathiel. While I don’t know if this is true or not it would explain why many of the same deeds are attributed to differently named angels. In addition, he has been identified with the angel who stayed the hand of Abraham when the latter was on the point of sacrificing his son Isaac. Among the recently discovered Dead Sea scrolls there is one titled War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness. Here Michael is called the "Prince of Light." He leads the angels of light in the battle against the legions of the angels of darkness, the latter under the command of Belial. He is also said to have informed the fallen angels of the Deluge. Michael is the best known of the Archangels. He was said to be God's champion and is usually pictured with an unsheathed sword. He is credited with winning the first battle against Satan, hurling him out of heaven.

Holy Scripture describes Michael as "one of the chief princes," and as leader of the forces of heaven in their triumph over the powers of hell. He is the prince who defended the Israelites and later, it was claimed, the Christian Church, when as guardian he may be called on (sometimes with Gabriel) to defend church doors against the evil angels.

According to the Gospel of Bartholomew it was Michael who assisted God in the creation of man by bringing him the earth with which God formed man. The archangel Michael is believed to have appeared to Moses as the fire in the burning bush, and to have rescued Daniel from the lions' den. It is foretold that when the world is in trouble again Michael will return. Many scholars say that this will be the century for his return. It is he who comes to rescue Israel and the nations during times of war just preceding the return of Jesus Christ according to the Book of Daniel. It is Michael who has the power to bind Satan for 1000 years during the millennium. Michael will be very active during the tribulation period and at the time of the return of Christ.

(Psa 34:7 NIV)  The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.

(Dan 10:13 KJV)  But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

(Dan 10:21 KJV)  But I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

(Dan 12:1 KJV)  And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

(Rev 12:7 KJV)  And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

(Rev 20:1-2 KJV)  And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Michael is definitely the prince of the people of Israel and it is he that protects and delivers them in times of war. During the tribulation period in the near future Michael will go into action and deliver the nation of Israel from the hand of Antichrist and bind Satan for a thousand years.

In the Epistle of Jude Michael disputed with Satan about the body of Moses. Michael is reputed to have concealed the tomb of Moses, but Satan, by disclosing it, tried to seduce the Jewish people to the sin of hero or idol worship of the body of Moses. Michael also guards the body of Eve, according to the "Revelation of Moses" and Apocryphal Gospel.

In the authors opinion the reason that Satan wanted the body of Moses was to preserve it for use during the tribulation period to create the illusion of a fake resurrection of Moses for the purpose of deceiving the Jews into worshipping the Antichrist. I believe that this is going to happen somehow, with or without the actual body of Moses. It appears that Enoch and Elijah will be on one side, the side of Jesus Christ and God the Father, and  the fake Moses (who will be the False prophet of Revelation) and the Antichrist will be on the opposite side directing worship to Antichrist, and through Antichrist to Satan. Time will tell if I am right or wrong and it is not a salvation issue. Just pure speculation on my part. Disregard it if you wish.

(John 9:28-29 NIV)  Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from."

(Acts 3:22-23 NIV)  For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.'

(Acts 7:37 NIV)  "This is that Moses who told the Israelites, 'God will send you a prophet like me from your own people.'

I believe that the Jews will accept a false Moses empowered by Satan before they accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Satan will twist the scriptures just enough to make the Jews and much of the world believe that Moses has been reincarnated during the tribulation period. However, after suffering under the reign of Antichrist many Israelites will become converted and welcome the return of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus Christ.

#2 - Gabriel: The Press Secretary and Minister of Information

Gabriel ("God is my strength") was the third angel created and ranks second in delegated authority since the fall of Satan. He is known as the angel of annunciation, resurrection, mercy, vengeance, death, revelation. As for the incident with the three men (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) who were rescued from the fiery furnace, it was Gabriel, according to Jewish legend, who performed this miracle along with rescuing Daniel from the lions den.

(Dan 3:28 NIV)  Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

(Dan 6:22 NIV)  My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king."

Gabriel seems to be God’s spokesman, his information minister. He is in charge of communications. He is like  the press secretary for the President of the United States. He is the leading angel who stands in the presence of the God as a coordinator. He is the bringer of news and heralds the revealing of answers.

The name Gabriel also means "Man of God" or "God Has Shown Himself Mightily." Gabriel is first mentioned in the prophecies of Daniel in the Old Testament. He announced to Daniel the prophecy of the seventy weeks, (Daniel 9:21-27). His name also occurs in the apocryphal book of Enoch. He was the Angel who appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist, (Luke 1, 11), the messenger Angel who announced to Mary that she would bear a Son who would be conceived of the Holy Spirit, Son of the Most High, and the Saviour of the world, (Luke 1:26)

Gabriel explained to Daniel his vision of a ram and a billy-goat foretelling Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia and a prophecy foretelling the freeing of the Israelites. In both these cases the Archangel is mentioned by name. It has also been suggested that Gabriel is the angel who wrestled with Jacob in the form of a man and that he was involved in the destruction of Sodom and Gommorah. Enoch says that Gabriel was sent to destroy the giant children of the fallen 'watchers' and did so by turning them against each other. According to legend, it is Gabriel who will blow the horn announcing the second coming of Christ.

Enoch 20: Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who is over Paradise and the serpents and the Cherubim.

The Cherubim, according to Enoch are under the command of Gabriel. As we have seen earlier Gabriel is the second highest ranking angel. Gabriel and those under him are given great and wonderful tasks to accomplish for God’s kingdom. Gabriel stands in the presence of God.

(Luke 1:19 KJV)  And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these glad tidings.

#3 - Raphael: The Archangel of Healing

Raphael ("God has healed") Raphael is known as "the shining one that heals". He is the Ruler of the second heaven, Chief of the Virtues, Guardian of the "Tree of life" and one of the seven angels of the throne. He is usually shown with a smile, a pleasant, happy angel, officially a Virtue angel, Raphael had six wings like the Seraph, but also belonged to the Cherubim, the Dominions and the Powers. Raphael is credited with giving the mysterious "Book of the Angel Raziel" (Sefer Noah) to Noah, a book said to possess the knowledge needed to build the Ark. In The Legends of the Jews I, 385, Raphael is the angel sent by God to cure Jacob of the injury to his thigh when Jacob wrestled the angel at Peniel. Raphael appears by name in The Book of Tobit. In this book, Raphael acts as companion and guide to Tobit's son Tobias who journeys to Media from Nineveh. It is only at the end of the journey that Raphael reveals himself by name as "one of the 7 holy angels" that attend the throne of God. In I Enoch, 20, Raphael is declared to be "one of the watchers". In I Enoch, 22, Raphael is a guide in sheol (i.e. the underworld). In I Enoch, 40, he is "one of the four presence’s, set over all the diseases and all the wounds of the children of men."

This Angel first appears in Holy Scripture in the Book of Tobit. He acts as a guide to young Tobiah on his journey to Rages, a city in the country of Medes, east of Nineveh, to collect a debt owed to his father. The Angel binds the demon Asasel in the desert of Egypt, helps Tobiah to find a wife and recover the debt, and heals Tobit from his blindness. He then reveals his identity: "I am the Angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the throne of God."

Tob 12:15 I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which present the prayers of the saints, and which go in and out before the glory of the Holy One.

Raphael is in charge of maintaining the earth and its people. He is apparently God’s “maintenance man”” and the doctor. He is in charge of fixing things that are broke or go awry, whether it is cleansing the planet earth itself or repairing a human body. When you call for a serviceman, like the maytag repairman, Raphael is the go to guy. He and the myriad of angels who work for him can get the job done and fix anything that is broken. This identity came about because of the biblical story which claims that he "healed" the earth when it was defiled by the sins of the fallen angels in the apocryphal book of Enoch. Raphael is also identified as the angel who moved the waters of the healing sheep pool.

(John 5:2-9 NIV)  Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,

In the Book of Enoch, Raphael is the guide to Sheol, the underworld, and it was he who was sent to bind the fallen 'watcher' Azazel, burying him under rocks in a desert place on earth. According to the Talmud, he is one of the three angels who visited Abraham after his circumcision.

#4 - Uriel: Archangel of Salvation, Light and Peace

Uriel  Meaning - "God is light", "God's light", Fire of God" Uriel is reported to have the abilities of both Seraphim and a Cherubim and is one of the four Angels of the Presence. He presides over Tartarus, the place of the dead, both saved and lost. Uriel is the light bearer for the gospel, and a blessing to those who accept it, but to those who reject the light he warns of the wrath of god to come. Uriel is credited with being the angel with the sharpest eye and the one who warned Noah of the forthcoming floods that would destroy humankind.

Michael and Gabriel are listed in the Protestant bible as archangels and Raphael and Uriel are added to the list in the Catholic and Greek bibles in the book of Tobit and Esdras (Greek for Ezra). Beyond that we are guessing at the order of the rank of the angels. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel (Phanuel) are mentioned many times Enochian literature as being companions in doing God’s work so they seem to be the four chief archangels with the others ranked after them.

2Esdr 4:36 And unto these things Uriel the archangel gave them answer,

2Esdr 4:1 And the angel that was sent unto me, whose name was Uriel, gave me an answer,

Uriel is known as the angel of salvation, light, peace and administration. It is said that He helps turn our worst disappointments into our greatest blessings. Uriel may be in charge of bringing the souls of men to salvation. It may be him and his minions that celebrate joyfully every time a lost person repents.

(Luke 15:7 NIV)  I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

(Luke 15:10 NIV)  In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

Enoch Chapter 9  And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth.

Then the Most High spoke, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech (Noah) and said to him: Hide thyself!  For the whole earth and all that is alive in it will be destroyed in a flood. And Uriel instructed Noah in how to build the ark that he and his seed might escape and preserve the generations of the world.

Uriel was sent by God to answer the questions of Esdras. He is also mentioned in I Enoch and IV Ezra. In the Midrash 1, Uriel is said to be one of the four guardians of God's throne. In The Book of Adam and Eve he presides over repentance. Uriel is one of the leading angels in noncanonical lore, and ranked variously as a Seraph, Cherub, Regent of the Sun, Flame of God, and Angel of the Presence. As one of the most faithful and dedicated members of the host, Uriel was also placed in charge of Tartarus (another name for Hades).

Uriel has been identified as one of the angels who helped bury Adam and Abel in Paradise. He is known as the angel who wrestled with Jacob at Peniel; as the destroyer of the hosts of Sennacherib; as the messenger sent by God to Noah to warn him of the impending deluge, although Raphael is credited with teaching the building of the ark through the writings of Raziel. In addition, Uriel is said to have disclosed the mysteries of the heavenly arcana to Ezra; interpreted prophecies, and led Abraham out of Ur.

In later Judaism and in Enoch we find Uriel instead of Phanuel" as one of the 4 angels of the presence. Legend tells us that it is who Uriel stands at the gate of the Lost Eden with a fiery sword guarding the tree of life.

Phanuel or Fanuel, Meaning: Face of God and Hope. Under the heading of Uriel we will also include Phanuel or Fanuel. In early literature Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Phanuel were the four most powerful archangels. Later it became Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel. I have never seen in ancient literature the two names used together in a sentence which names the four highest ranking angels, which leads me to suspect that they are one and the same angel. It may be that like Michael, who has a last name of Sabbathiel, Uriel may have a last name of Phanuel, or vice versa. In any event, for the purpose of this study, any data that is found concerning Phanuel will be listed here under Uriel.

In the eighth century, the Roman Catholic Church became alarmed at the rampant and excessive zeal with which many of the faithful were revering angels.  At that time under Pope Zachary, a Roman council ordered seven angels removed from the ranks of the Church’s recognized angels, one of them being Uriel.

#5 - Raguel - Friend of God

RAGUEL Meaning -  "Friend of God"  Raguel is known as the "Friend of God" and watches over the good behavior of the angels. He is also referred to as the archangel of Justice and Fairness, Raguel oversees all the other archangels and angels.  He watches over them to make sure they’re working well together in a harmonious and orderly fashion according to Divine order and will. Raguel is known as the angel that escorted Enoch to heaven and was the angel of earth and a guardian of the second heaven. Raguel is said to be in charge of the friends of God, the saved, during their lifetimes. In the apocryphal Revelation of John, Raguel is referred to as an assistant to God at the last judgment in the following account: "Then shall He send the angel Raguel, saying: Go and sound the trumpet for the angels of cold and snow and ice, and bring together every kind of wrath upon them that stand on the left." He is one of the 7 Archangels listed in the Enoch writings. Of the order of Principalities, Raguel is an angel of earth, a guard of the 2nd (or 4th) Heaven, and watching over the good behavior of his fellow angels. He "takes vengeance on the world of luminaries," which is interpreted to mean that, for cause, he brings other angels to account.

Raguel is listed fifth because he is in charge of guarding the life of the saved during their sojourn on the earth.

#6 - Saraquel - The Angel Of Death

We list Saraquel sixth because it seem to make sense because he is known as the angel of death and six is the number of man and of death. From Michael to Saraquel (The number one angel to the sixth angel) completes the cycle of birth and death, followed by the seventh archangel who heralds the resurrection and a time of rest. This is similar to the days of the week, six days to work followed by a day of rest.

Saraquel, is pictured in legend as having gigantic proportions: one foot rests in either the fourth or the seventh heaven, while the other is on the bridge between hell and paradise. He may be angel in the book of revelation that has one foot on the land and one on the sea, holding back the winds of death until the proper time.

According to legend Saraquel keeps a roll of humanity, on which the names of the damned are circled in black and the names of the blessed, in white light. When a person's day of death approaches, a leaf with the person's name on it falls from the tree beneath God's throne. After forty days have passed, Saraquel must sever the individual's soul from his or her body. He is reputed to be angel who accompanies souls to Heaven or hell after death. The phrase 'the Wings of Azrael' (Saraquel) refers to the approach of death; the signs of death coming on the dying.

#7 - Remiel - The Angel Of Resurrection

Remiel is listed seventh because he is the angel of the resurrection of the dead. He is known as the "Lord of souls awaiting resurrection. After the angel of death Saraquel has done his job, then comes Remiel awakening the dead to rise to newness of life. Remiel may be the angel who sounds the seventh trumpet and signals the dead to rise and the living to join them in the air at the first resurrection. (commonly called the rapture) He is credited with the destruction of the armies of Sennacherib, being the carrier of the instructions of the "Seven Archangels", and the one who presides over "true vision".

Remiel (Mercy of God or Whom God Sets Up) One of the holy angels, whom God set over those who rise. Leads souls to judgment. Also angel of true visions. Remiel is accredited with two tasks. First, he is the angel responsible for true divine visions, and is said to be the angel to give such a vision to Baruch. Beyond that, he is also the guide for the souls of the faithful, leading them into Heaven after Michael weighs them at the last trump. This is not to be confused with Saraquel’s job of leading the souls to their place immediately after death. Remiels job takes place after the rapture and the last judgment.

Honorary Archangels: Enoch and Elijah

The two men who have not yet died, but will die soon during the tribulation period, have been elevated in legend to “Honorary Archangel” status. Enoch is known as Metatron and Elijah as Sandalphon.

Metatron

One of the only two Archangels whose name does not end in "el" and one of the only two Archangels who were humans before becoming Angels (his brother Elijah/Sandalphon being the other).  His human name was Enoch.  The meaning of Metatron is unclear, but some believe it means "he who occupies the throne next to the Divine throne", "the Angel of the Presence" or that his name is a derivation of the name Yahweh, the Jewish term for the unspoken sacred name of God.

On earth Enoch was a prophet and scribe.  He was also a scholar on heavenly secrets, having received "The Book of the Angel Raziel", a textbook about God's workings penned by Archangel Raziel and given to Adam, Noah, Enoch and Solomon. As a result, God escorted Enoch directly to the seventh Heaven - the highest level - to reside and work.

Since Metatron excelled at his work on earth, he was given a similar job in Heaven to scribe the records of everything that happens on earth and keep the "Book of Life". He is the chief recorder in Heaven and in charge of recording and organizing all the records. He is called the heavenly scribe who records all celestial happenings.

Sandalphon

Only one of the two archangels whose name doesn't end with an "el", Sandalphon is the twin brother of Archangel Metatron. The twins are the only Archangels in Heaven who were originally mortal men. Sandalphon was the prophet Elijah and Metatron was the wise man Enoch. God gave both men their heavenly assignments as archangels to reward them for their good work upon Earth, allowing them to continue their sacred service in Heaven until it is time for them to return to earth and die at the hands of Antichrist during the tribulation period. Sandalphon's chief role is to carry human prayers to God so they may be answered.

Dr. Billy Graham states in his book “Angels” that there are ranks in the orders or angels. He explains them to be, archangels, angels, seraphim, cherubim, principalities, authorities, powers, thrones, might, and dominion.

(Rom 8:38-39 KJV)  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Col 1:16 KJV)  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Other Angels (In Alphabetical Order)

Azazel (Azael, Hazazel, "God strengthens") in I Enoch, Azazel is one of the chiefs of the 200 fallen angels. Azazel "taught men to fashion swords and shields" while women learned from him "finery and the art of beautifying the eyelids." Jewish legend speaks of Azazel as the angel who refused to bow down before Adam. And in Islamic lore, when God commanded the angels to worship Adam, Azazel refused, contending "Why should a son of fire fall down before a son of clay?"

Ariel (Arael, Ariael, “lion of God") the name of an angel in the apocryphal Ezra. Ariel is often pictured as lion-headed. Historical: "Ariel is the name of an angel, sometimes also of a demon, and of a city, whence called Ariopolis, where the idol is worshipped" Mention is also made of Ariel as an angel who assists Raphael in the cure of disease.

Camael, Chamuel or
Camiel, Camiul, Camniel, Cancel, Jahoel, Kemuel, Khamael, Seraphiel, Shemuel . His name means "he who sees God", or "He who seeks God." He is listed as one of the seven truly powerful angels who have the great honor of standing in the very presence of God.  Originally the God of War in Druid mythology, he is frequently referred to as the ruler of the planet Mars, as well as one of the governing angels of the seven planets. According to Jewish custom, Camael serves as the mediator, taking prayers of Israel before the angelic princes residing in the seventh heaven.   He is known as the Archangel of pure love. Chamuel is attributed with the power to help us to renew and improve existing relationships as well as finding our soul mates.

Galizur (Hebrew, "revealer of the rock") one of the great angels in Talmudic lore whom Moses encountered in heaven, as related by Simon ben Lakish. It was Galizur, "surnamed Raziel", who is reputed to have given Adam The Book of the Angel Raziel. He is a ruling prince of the 2nd Heaven and an expounder of the Torah's divine wisdom.

Israfel "Burning One", "Angel of Song" Israfel the patron angel of entertainers is said to have the sweetest voice of all God’s creatures, singing praises of God in a thousand different tongues.

Jeremiel  or Ramiel In ancient Judaic texts, Jeremiel is listed as one of the seven core archangels, his name meaning ("mercy of God" or "whom God sets up"). He is credited with helping Baruch, a prolific author of apocryphal Judaic texts in the first century A.D., with his prophetic visions. It is also said that he took Baruch on a tour of the different levels of Heaven.  The coming of the Messiah was one of Jeremiel's visions. Legend has it that it is Jeremiel who review's our lives with us after we've crossed over.

Jophiel:  Also known as: Iofiel, Iophiel, Jofiel, Zophiel. Meaning - "Beauty of God" Jophiel is known as the Angel present in the Garden of Eden and who later watched over Noah’s sons.  The archangel of art and beauty, he is the patron of artists, helping with artistic projects, thinking beautiful thoughts, to see and appreciate beauty around us.

Raziel  (Galizur) Raziel ("Secret of God","angel of mysteries") Author of The Book of the Angel Raziel, "wherein all celestial and earthly knowledge is set down." The Book of the Angel Raziel is reputed to contain the 1,500 keys to the mysteries of the universe. His knowledge stems from the fact that he traditionally stands at the very curtains separating God from the rest of Creation and hears and notes everything that is said or done around the throne of the Lord. Unfortunately, they are written in a language so arcane and impossible to decipher (without presumably the aid of Raziel himself) that not even the greatest angels of heaven are able to figure it out.

Legend has it that the angel Raziel handed his book to Adam after Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden. The other angels, out of envy, stole the precious book and cast it into the sea, Then God ordered Rahab, also known as Leviathan, the beast of the deep, to fish it out and restore it to Adam. The book was then handed down from father to son until it became the property of Enoch, who gave it out as his own work, calling it The Book of Enoch. Enoch passed Raziel's book to his son, Methuselah, who gave it to his son, Lamech, who gave it to his son, Noah. Noah gained the knowledge to build the ark from Raziel's book. This is not to be confused with Raphael, who is the angel to give Raziel's tome to Noah, but did not write it himself. It is said that many of the great Ancient Prophets learned form the archangel Raziel, including Abraham & Sarah, Rachel, Noah, Solomon, Elijah, and many more. It is said that from Raziel’s book Solomon learned from it his great knowledge and wisdom.

SARIEL Sariel was responsible for the fate of angels who transgress the Laws. Sariel was also the Angel of Death. It was claimed that Sariel was a healer like Raphael, a Seraphim and the Prince of the Presence. Though not recorded in fact, it was stated by some that Sariel was in fact one of the fallen rebel angels.

Zadkiel “Righteousness of God" Angel of Freedom, benevolence, mercy, and the Patron Angel of all who forgive.
Belonging to the ranks of the dominions, and considered by some to be chief, Zadkiel is considered an angel of mercy. Some say it was he who held back the hand of Abraham to prevent the patriarch from sacrificing his son, and because of this is usually shown holding a dagger. Also, Zadkiel is one of two standard bearers (along with Zophiel) who follow directly behind Michael as the head archangel enters battle.
